Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci has stated that no evidence was found that suggests that dog and cat meat were used to produce Maltese sausage by a Gozitan butcher.

Gauci’s statement comes after rumours began circulating that the butcher was serving these sausages made from the meat of sick animals.

Lovin Malta went to the site of the shop in Xagħra and discovered that it had been closed for around six years, however, members of the community suggested that he was selling the sausages on the side, making people sick in the meantime. The Association for Abandoned Animals also claimed that these rumours were true.

However, on an RTK103 radio show, the public health chief said that no evidence to corroborate these claims was found through joint investigations involving the police and veterinary department. She further stated that were no reports from any local hospitals of food poisoning that could be connected to the case.

Gauci explained that authorities visited other localities that linked to the butcher to investigate claims that the sausages were being made at another location but still found no evidence.

She said that no equipment related to the Maltese sausage was found anywhere.

The agriculture ministry also confirmed that no evidence was found to support the claims but added that investigations are still ongoing.
