Oldest HMV Sign In The World Damaged By Crane In Valletta
The world’s oldest His Master’s Voice sign, that many of us know to be outside D’Amato Records, was damaged by a crane that was being used for construction on the opposite side of the road last night.
D’Amato Records, one of, if not the oldest record store in the world hung this HMV sign right after World War II. Speaking to Times of Malta, D’Amato said “The sign was hung up after the war. It is the oldest HMV sign in the world and most likely the most photographed one in Valletta,”
The owner got in touch with the contractor about the damaged sign and he sarcastically replied he was “sure it was worth a lot of money”.
D’Amato will be filing a police report for the incident.
The sign is made out of perspex which D’Amato is worried won’t be able to be fixed.
“I think Valletta has had a piece of its clothing ripped from it – the sign was part of the texture of Valletta,” he said.
Comments under the facebook post D’Amato Records posted breaking the news are filled with people sharing their disappointment, and demanding justice for the record shop.
