The historic Fort St Elmo in Valletta played host to Malta’s first ever Self Made Market last weekend serving as the cultural backdrop to a spectacular debut. This market was organised by nofacemt, an initiative founded by full-time freelancer and creator Johann Agius in collaboration with three network members: Nicole and Elenia Borg from Lincole Handmade and Jessica Magro from Carina Print & Designs.

From 11am to 6pm, the fort’s outdoor corridor was transformed into a vibrant marketplace where local creators showcased their handmade, printed and designed products with an impressive array of stalls, offering everything from art and home decor to jewellery, baked goods and crochet items.

This inaugural event was not only a celebration of craftsmanship but also a valuable learning experience for the organisers, paving the way for future growth and improvements.

The Selfmade Market was meticulously designed to place the creators and vendors at its heart, ensuring they felt welcomed and supported throughout the day. This vendor-centric approach proved to be a key factor in the event’s success, fostering a warm and inclusive atmosphere that made vendors feel right at home.
Visitors were treated to a delightful experience, discovering unique, self-made products also coming from a number of new faces to the local markets scene.

Nofacemt aims to create a network of freelancers and creators, providing them with opportunities to showcase their talents and products. “Our goal is to empower our network members, helping them grow as freelancers and creators,” Johann explained.

“Events like the Selfmade Market provide a platform for them to shed light on their products and explore new ideas and opportunities.”

Reflecting on the success of this first edition, Nicole and Jessica outlined their commitment to making future events even better.

“Our goal was never to organise one market and use it as the blueprint for all other ones. We remained open throughout the whole experience in order to gain insights and collect feedback from vendors. This knowledge will be instrumental in refining the market experience, ensuring it continues to support and celebrate the vibrant community of local creators and freelancers.”

“The feedback we received from vendors was overwhelmingly positive,” Agius added, “Based on their input, we are already planning a second edition of the market later this year. We look forward to hosting more unique vendors and continuing to grow this wonderful community.”
