A man suspected of depositing over 1,000 bags of human excrement and other litter in the Marsaxlokk countryside has been apprehended after being caught in the act by the Malta Ranger Unit.

In a Facebook post, the Rangers revealed that for the past four years, they have found human faeces wrapped in a milk carton and placed in a plastic bag with other litter dumped at the same rural spot in Marsaxlokk every single day.

“A report was sent to our Rangers about an individual depositing a milk carton, wrapped in plastic, containing human faeces and other smaller litter in Marsaxlokk,” the NGO stated.

“This had been ongoing for years, but the offender was never spotted, and cleanup groups/Council continued to clean the site.”

“It’s anticipated that this individual has deposited over 1,000 packages throughout the years (the offences trace back to 2020), with nearly one package being thrown every day. The packages were thrown in the exact same spot,” Rangers wrote.

However, thanks to a surveillance operation, Rangers who monitored the site for a week were able to gather sufficient evidence to file a police report once the man was identified.

“We wish to thank the Birżebbuġa and Marsaxlokk Community Policing Team for their assistance,” the Rangers wrote on social media, adding that “the individual will now be charged as per SL. 549.40 and with the accumulation of litter over the years, as well as the sanitary issue, the fine could go up to €6,000 if convicted in court.”

They went on to say that “Marsaxlokk will now be a cleaner place, and the offender will be held accountable for his bad habit.” The NGO stated that they will be doing “their duty and be present in court to give their statement and hand over the evidence.”
