The Franciscan Church in Valletta, more commonly referred to as Ta’ Ġieżu, was broken into and its donation box stolen, the Franciscan community revealed on social media.

“Unfortunately, yesterday we had to request Police assistance since during these past few weeks, several shrines and donation boxes were broken into,” they wrote on Facebook, accompanying several photos of the damages.

“In the last few days, the ‘Duluri’ donation box was stolen and found abandoned nearby the church,” the post read.

The Franciscans went on to explain how the perpetrators also tried to break into the box containing the church’s famous miraculous crucifix.

In their post, they explained their suspicion that those responsible for the thefts and damage are acting deliberately, considering that the church is regularly monitored during its operational hours.

They expressed particular concern over the ongoing harm inflicted and are exploring the potential installation of CCTV surveillance to safeguard the church’s security.

The Church also urged anyone with any information on the theft to inform the Valletta Police station or security guard P. Ramon Farrugia OFM.

“Whoever wants to help can donate via Revolut or BOV Pay on 99246768.”

“In light of the thefts, we were given the advice to keep the church closed. However, this would mean that many daily church-goers would have to pay the price of this closure, and we would be letting evil win.”

“So no, the church will not be closed. On the contrary, we invite you to keep filling the church with your presence,” the Church wrote in a separate Facebook post.
