Deadlocke: Birkirkara Councillors Don’t Manage To Reach Agreement On Town’s New Mayor

PL Councillor for Birkirkara, Yana Borg Debono Grech, took to Facebook to share what happened in a meeting between the newly elected Birkirkara Councillors.

In this year’s Local Council Elections, Birkirkara, like many other localities, saw an independent councillor being elected, Kaylocke Buhagiar. The rest of the 12 seats were spread equally between PN and PL. Kaylocke Buhagiar was the fourth most voted for candidate, with Yana Borg Debono Grech being the most voted for, in terms of first-count votes.

Borg Debono Grech states that in a meeting that occurred between all councillors that she was nominated for the role of mayor and Kaylocke Buhagiar as vice mayor, but wasn’t confirmed as there were six votes in favour of this motion and seven votes against. The same happened when a PN councillor was nominated.

“Dan ġara għax il-Kunsilliera tal-Partiti ivvutaw skont in-nomini tal-Partiti rispettivi tagħhom u l-Indipendenti ivvota kontra l-Partit Laburista kif ukoll kontra l-Partit Nazzjonalista.”

Buhagiar has stated his intents of becoming Birkirkara’s mayor when interviewed by Lovin Malta, similar to what happened in Ħaż-Żebbuġ, where Steve Zammit Lupi became mayor through unanimous support from the council. This can prove to be a bit of a challenge as in order to be nominated for the mayoral role, one has to be nominated by another councillor.

No other councillor has commented on this. Who do you think will be Birkirkara’s next mayor?
