Three-Day Local Council Election Vote Counting Kicks Off Today… And Here’s Which Localities Are Up First

The MEP election results might’ve been the only thing anyone was talking about in the last couple of days, but until the rest of the week, another election is about to take centre stage.

Today, at around 4pm, the counting of votes for the Local Council Elections will kick off, and it’s expected to last all the way until Friday. This, of course, is because there are way more seats up for grabs – instead of six MEP seats, there are now 471 council seats across 67 localities (53 in Malta, 14 in Gozo) that need to be decided.

And after this weekend’s surprise result which saw PN slash the gap between it and PL from over 40,000 to just more than 8,000, all eyes will be on the outcome of the Local Council Elections, which have traditionally always gone Labour’s way. However, with an upset happening just days ago and the turnout for the local council elections standing at a mere 59.47%, could PL end up losing for the first time in two decades? Only time will tell.

The localities have been split in three different groups, with cities like St. Paul’s Bay, St. Julian’s, Valletta and more set to kick off today. And while Labour managed to gain a number of localities back in 2019, it’s believed that some of them are in jeopardy of switching blue again.
Today, vote counting will go down for Birżebbuġa, San Ġiljan, Tarxien, Iklin, Żurrieq, St. Paul’s Bay, Pembroke, Ta’ Xbiex, Santa Venera, Għajnsielem, Mellieħa, Żejtun, Mqabba, Valletta, Qrendi, Żebbuġ, Nadur, Marsa, Fontana, Balzan, Dingli, Għasri and Xewkija.

Stay tuned for more updates and let us know what you’re expecting from these next couple of days.
