Maltese politics are getting a wave of fresh faces as young candidates were elected into office with some going down in history as being the youngest to occupy that role.

Among the elected is 24-year-old PL candidate Luke Farrugia, who has been elected as the Mayor of Marsa. His election marks him as one of the youngest mayors in Malta’s history

Similarly, St. Julian’s welcomes 23-year-old Sean Gauci as its new Vice Mayor. Having already served as a councillor, Gauci’s reelection with the Nationalist Party reaffirms the trust the community places in young leaders. Joining him in St Julian’s council is Gabriel Borg Ferrando, who at just 16, is now the youngest male councillor elected in Malta.

Not to be outdone, 19-year-old Simona Refalo could become Gozo’s youngest mayor with her recent win in Xewkija with the Labour Party.

Similarly in Gozo, 24-year-old Thomas Mizzi was confirmed as the Mayor of Fontana winning with a Nationalist majority.

16-year-old Nina Briffa of Qrendi has set records as the youngest female councillor.

28-year-old Steve Zammit Lupi has also made a remarkable impact in the Żebbuġ 2024 local council elections, more than doubling his initial vote count from 2019.

His impressive tally of 2,342 first-count votes not only topped the charts but also helped his mother, Lillibeth, secure a council seat as an independent, with the help of votes transferred from her son.

Today, the counting of votes continues with the potential of more youths being elected in Maltese politics.
