Watch: One Small Step – PN MP Wants To Send Maltese Astronaut To International Space Station

A Nationalist MP has urged Malta to aim for the stars in a very literal sense.

Ryan Callus said the country should focus on sending a Maltese astronaut to the International Space Station.

“I don’t just want us to debate whether Malta should have observer status at the European Space Agency,” he said in Parliament. “I want us to be full members of the ESA and to focus on sending the first ever Maltese person to the International Space Station. It isn’t out of the question. We have the quality, we have the human resources, and we have people who are currently trusted so much by space agencies that they are given access to their research samples.”

“We have a lot of potential in this sector but it will require political will from both sides of the House. We shouldn’t be determined by our small size, but by our capabilities and determination.”

So far, astronauts of 23 nationalities have visited the International Space Station, with the United States sending the most astronauts by far, followed by Russia.
