‘We Must Unite Like Never Before’: MEP Alex Agius Saliba Says Civil Servants Need To Be Incentivised

PL MEP Alex Agius Saliba has urged the government to incentivise civil servants and secretariat workers to address people’s problems better.

“This is a time where we must unite like never before,” Agius Saliba said. “We can unite by opening our doors to genuine people who love the Labour Party but who were sidelined in the recent past. We can unite by incentivising and sustaining civil servants and secretariat workers further to allow them to address people’s real problems better.”

“There is strength in unity, and when the PL is a single united front, no one can manage to overcome overcome us. Now is the time to roll up our sleeves even more. I’m convinced that, with goodwill and unity, we can get there.”

Agius Saliba’s comments have been interpreted by some people within the PL as a thinly veiled criticism of Prime Minister Robert Abela’s post-election warning to government workers who view their position as a “cushy job” to start considering their own future.

In an interview on ONE after last weekend’s electoral shock, Abela said he has no remorse about his own personal commitment to the nation but questioned whether other government employees can say likewise.

“I’m not just talking about people who are in the top tier like me because I’m very satisfied with their work, commitment and dedication,” he said. “However, when you start going down the pyramid… people in government structures aren’t there to have a cushy job and I want to make this message clear. Those who want that kind of work must take a decision tomorrow before it is forced upon them.”

Lovin Malta has asked Agius Saliba what he thinks about the Prime Minister’s comment but hasn’t received a response yet.
