Soup Kitchen OFM Valletta has received the prestigious 2023 European Citizen’s Award, for the organisation’s work in providing over 120,000 meals to over 30,000 guests – for free.

The soup kitchen was established in 2021 by Marcellino Micallef, who brought together a team which would help combat two problems, rising economic strife and intense food waste, by feeding as many people as possible.

Soup Kitchen OFM was nominated for the prize by MEP David Casa.

This prize exists so that the European Parliament can acknowledge and reward examples of civic excellence, by promoting what is regarded as exemplary behaviour between citizens, which often come in the form of excising solidarity with those around us.

The EP regards this particular prize as “an opportunity to pay attention to those people and organizations who do hard work – to make the world a little better – encouraging others to follow in their footsteps.”
