Avoid St George’s Bay: E.Coli Contamination Prompts New Warning To Bathers
Summer is just around the corner, and nearly just in time for bathers to start making their way to Malta’s beaches, a fresh new warning has been issued, once again related to an e.coli contamination.
The Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health has issued a notice that bathing is not recommended at St George’s Bay. According to the Bathing Water Directive, due to the presence of microbiological contamination, E. coli and I. enterococci, water quality is affected and provides a risk to bathers’ health.
Signs notifying the public of the potential hazard have been placed in the area, as Environmental Health Officers are investigating to determine the source of contamination.

The warning aligns with the guidelines set forth by the Bathing Water Directive, which monitors and maintains the quality of bathing water to protect public health.
At the moment, it is unclear how long the contamination will persist, and the prohibition remains in effect until further notice. Once the issue has been resolved and the area is deemed safe for swimming, the public will be informed through another statement.
This is far from the first time that warnings have been issued regarding Malta’s beaches, with St. George’s Bay being one of the most prominent as far as these warnings go.
