Mellieħa Mayor Warns Signs Alone Won’t Stop Risk At Mġiebaħ Bay

Mellieħa mayor Gabriel Micallef has criticised months of bureaucratic delays before warning signs were finally installed at Mġiebaħ Bay, where unstable rock formations pose a serious risk to bathers.
Signs have been put up at Mġiebaħ Bay warning against the danger of falling rocks.
Mġiebaħ Bay, tucked away in Mellieħa’s Selmun area, is a go-to spot for swimmers looking for peace and quiet, but over the past couple days, the deep cracks in the rocks have reached media attention.
Locals had been flagging the issue for months before action was finally taken.
Mellieħa mayor Gabriel Micallef confirmed with Lovin Malta that he had spent months trying to shed light on the danger at Mġiebaħ bay
Apart from the Lands Authority, Micallef had to file police report, which was followed up with on site inspection and report to highlight the dangers, which proved to be a hurdle that lengthened the process.
“It doesn’t take four months to put up a couple of signs,” Micallef said after the signs were ordered in June.
The mayor also said signs will not solve the problem entirely. “Anyone can walk beyond the signs and risk their lives, fencing off the area would not be an ideal situation,” Micallef suggested blocking the dangerous area off with boulders that wouldn’t be an eyesore, blending in with the natural landscape of the bay.
Whether the area will be fenced off or reinforced remains unclear. What was once a peaceful hidden gem could now pose serious risks to visitors.
