Resident Sounds Alarm About Precarious Rock Overhanging Bathers At Imġiebaħ

A concerned resident has raised the alarm over what appears to be a dangerous rock perched above bathers at Imġiebaħ Bay in Selmun.

Frenki Dragan Crnjakovic uploaded a post to Facebook warning that the rock looks ready to give way at any moment. He noted that he had issued a similar warning last year but little seems to have been done since.

“A huge chunk of rock is waiting for its moment to crash into the sea.  I wrote about this last year, but it seems my post didn’t reach many people,” wrote Crnjakovic on Facebook.

Photos shared with the post show a large rock that appears to be precariously positioned above part of the bay, with beachgoers still setting up their towels and umbrellas directly beneath it. It is not clear whether any warning signs are in place or whether visitors can properly see the rock from where they are located.

Crnjakovic urged people to spread the word and called on the authorities to take action.

It is unclear whether any report has been filed with the authorities about the matter. The warning comes weeks after the publication of a magisterial inquiry into the death of 22-year-old Mirabelle Falzon, who was killed in July 2024 when rocks fell from the dilapidated Riħama Battery above Munxar in Marsascala.

That inquiry found that repeated reports about the battery’s dangerous state had been lost in the bureaucracy of government authorities, allowing the structure to deteriorate until tragedy struck.

The inquiry recommended that responsibility for handling reports of dangerous structures, whether state-owned or private, should fall under a single government entity so that urgent risks can be dealt with swiftly. The government said it would be implementing the inquiry’s recommendations.
