Watch: Heaviest Bony Fish In The World – The Mola Mola – Spotted By Boaters Near Comino
Witnesses aboard a boat in the sea just off the coast of Comino caught sight of a strange looking fish in the water beside their boat earlier today.
“At first, we thought it was a baby shark,” said Sukru Sengun to Lovin Malta, having caught a glimpse of the fish as it surfaced.
These fish are not particularly well known, though they are quite recognisable. They are often as tall as they are long.
A Mola mola was spotted in Gozo as recently as 2020, so while this was not the first ever, Sengun’s remains a rare sighting.
The Mola mola, or ocean sunfish, is the heaviest known bony fish in the world – with an average adult weight of 1,000 kilos.
The species is native to temperate waters around the globe, which means that the Mediterranean falls well within its habitable range. They feed largely on larger animals such as squid and crustaceans, both of which can be found in waters around Malta.
The Mola mola drifted mysteriously in the shallows beside Sengun’s ship for some time, before retreating into the depths below.
