5 Things That Happen At Every Maltese Family Get-Together
Christmas is a time for all the family to get together, quality time with drinks and cheer can only lead to good things right?
Each family has different traditions however there are some essential moments during Maltese Christmas dinners that most families experience:
1. The Nanna who does not stop bringing out food
We all have experienced that feeling of being in a food coma and your nanna is still stuffing food down your throat. Whether it’s more ham, some more soup, or slices of the Christmas log she made.
2. The awkward yearly call to that one specific family member
It could be someone from your dad’s side of the family, or one of your mother’s friends, but there’s always that one person whom you have to talk to on the phone, even though you barely ever talk to them. There’s always the awkward ”yes I’m in Uni now”. And them replying with ”ila you’re growing up so fast.”
3. The drunk uncle who falls asleep in front of the TV
Drinks have been going round since 11am and it all finally gets to the one uncle who did not refuse a single one. Whilst everyone else is chattering away about which Christmas song is their favourite, this uncle has disappeared from the table and is suddenly in the living room fast asleep on the sofa.
4. The person who gets super competitive during board game time
Whether your family enjoys playing Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit, there is always that one person who gets insanely competitive and starts throwing tantrums when the they start to lose. Throughout the years, this person usually turns into the one who cheats all the time.
5. You vow to stop eating for the rest of the day, only to start snacking again two hours later
You’re so sick of eating that you promise yourself that you won’t eat for the remainder of the day. But after a few hours some of your food gets digested and somehow there’s more room for cake, chocolate, and anything else your nanna offers.
Despite all this, it still ends up being one of the best days of the year, with memories you will talk about for years.
