A new crop of Christmas stamps have just been released – and for the first time ever in Malta’s history, they feature Santa Claus and his elves at work.

Annual stamp designs are a key element of Christmas in Malta, and this year’s latest crop will be issued on 29th November. The stamps feature Santa and three colourful elves emptying a letterbox and preparing toys in preparation for Christmas.

MaltaPost has issued Christmas stamps annually since 1964 and, with an innovative set to increase their appeal to the younger generation, this is the first time they have shown Santa and his elves at work.

“Each year we brainstorm ideas for the annual Christmas stamp and this year I suggested Santa’s workshop… I hope they’ll add a little magic to the Christmas post and make people smile as they send and receive Christmas cards.” says local artist Fabio Agius, the stamps’ designer and staff member of the MaltaPost.

Ever since 1964, MaltaPost has annually released Christmas Stamps. And for the first time ever, they are issuing a design displaying Santa and his elves at work.

”They are very colourful and show Santa with his elves as they stitch a doll and paint a train. It’s really exciting to be giving a glimpse into Santa’s workshop for the first time!” said Mary Grace Simpson, Head of Philately.

A second set of Christmas stamps will also be issued in December, which will have a more traditional design, including the nativity scene.

Agius, co-founder of Malta Comic Con, has previously drawn legend-based and comic-inspired stamp designs.

One of his designs includes a fascinating depiction of a dragon and a knight battling each other in front of one of Malta’s iconic Megalithic Temples.

These innovative Christmas Stamps will be issued on 29th November, by Maltapost, and will be available in all Post Offices in Malta and Gozo.

They will be available as a pair of stamps on a collectable miniature sheet which shows the whole of Agius’ drawing, and additionally an extra loose pair.
