A spectacular 19-metre Christmas tree made of recycled glass bottles has just been inaugurated in the main square of the Gozitan town of Għajnsielem.

A total of 4,500 upcycled glass bottles were used to design the tree which was mounted by a strong steel structure, with many lights then hung up including chandeliers and lanterns.

“We passed by this afternoon and everything looked so magical, well done to all involved, and a merry Christmas,” one passerby expressed.

The breathtaking tree has been lit up with more than 7,000 light bulbs and measures over eight metres wide.

Most artificial Christmas trees are not recyclable and are disposed of in landfills, not to mention the carbon emissions and resources that are used up for shipping unless they are made locally.

So, who said that a tree can’t be both sustainable and so beautiful?

The Għajnsielem tree was blessed by the archpriest of Għajnsielem, with Frankie Bajada commenting on the abortion debate currently happening on our island, saying, “we should stop any amendment introducing abortion… otherwise what Christmas we will be celebrating?”
