31-Year-Old Man Denies Sexual Assault Charges Involving 13-Year-Old Girl

A 31-year-old man from Birgu has pleaded not guilty to charges of non-consensual sexual acts, harassment of a 13-year-old girl, and recidivism.
Times of Malta reported the accused, Andre Massa, was reportedly on a boat with the victim’s family when he allegedly touched the girl’s breasts while she was asleep.
During the court sitting, lawyer Arthur Azzopardi requested a ban on the publication of Massa’s name, citing the unpopularity of his surname and his close family ties to the alleged victim.
However, the court only imposed a ban on naming the minor involved.
His lawyer also requested bail, noting that the girl had already given her recorded statement. Azzopardi emphasised that Massa did not own the boat where the offence took place and that he had strong ties to Malta.
Prosecutor Miriyah Borg opposed the bail request, arguing that several civilian witnesses who are familiar with the accused still need to testify under oath.
After hearing submissions, the court denied bail, but urged the prosecution to ensure the civilian witnesses are summoned at the very first hearing.
Magistrate Lara Lanfranco presided over the case. The prosecution was led by AG lawyer Miriyah Borg, assisted by police inspectors Wayne Bonello and Ryan Vella.
Arthur Azzopardi appeared for the accused.
