Architect Adriana Zammit, responsible for the project that collapsed and killed Jean Paul Sofia, has been suspended from her government job at Infrastructure Malta (IM), Times of Malta reported.

This comes after the conclusion and publication of a Magisterial Inquiry into the young man’s death which revealed a host of shortcomings that led to the untimely tragedy.

Zammit is one of five being charged with manslaughter of 20-year-old Sofia.

The other four include contractors Milomir Jovicevic and Dijana Jovicevic and developers Matthew Schembri and Kurt Buhagiar.

The inquiry revealed that Zammit requested photos of the site’s progress via WhatsApp rather than fulfilling her professional obligation to do regular site visits.

In fact, workers testified to never seeing a woman on the Corradino site.

Besides this, in her report, Magistrate Marse-Anne Farrugia said that designs provided by Zammit did not include instructions about the necessary steel reinforcement.

Meanwhile, Farrugia also stated that Zammit appeared to have transferred a significant amount of properties and money in the weeks succeeding the incident.

The inquiry further exposed that there was no licensed site manager and that the workers had little-to-no training.

Schembri was the one who was coordinating and delegating works and he admitted to assuming the role because of a “language barrier” with the contractors.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced the issuing of a Public Inquiry that will look into the systemic flaws that allowed a death like Sofia’s to occur.

This is pertinent when considering the obscene number of lives lost to the construction industry in Malta.
