Malta’s Attorney General has appealed a court decision that prevented Daniel Joe Meli from being extradited to the United States, as reported by the Times of Malta.

The appeal was filed last week, shortly after Meli won his legal battle to avoid extradition on charges related to the alleged sale of illegal malware on the dark web between 2012 and 2022.

Meli, a 28-year-old from Żabbar, is wanted in the US for allegedly selling a remote access trojan (RAT). He was initially arrested in February of last year but later fought the extradition request, citing a recently amended Maltese law.

The court ultimately dismissed the extradition request, ruling that the prosecution failed to meet the required burden of proof under Maltese law. Meli’s case has garnered significant public support, with over 4,000 people signing a petition opposing his extradition.
