Former minister Chris Cardona is set to testify today as defence lawyers for four men accused of two separate murders continue presenting their case, according to Times of Malta’s live blog.

Cardona’s name surfaced during key testimony by Vince Muscat, known as il-Koħħu, who claimed that the former minister was involved in an earlier plot to assassinate journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Muscat told the court that years before her 2017 murder, he and others were approached to carry out the killing in a plan allegedly led by Cardona and brokered by his associate, David Gatt. That plan reportedly fell through after a deposit was never paid.

Muscat is testifying against brothers Adrian and Robert Agius (known as Ta’ Maksar), George Degiorgio, and Jamie Vella — all of whom plead not guilty.

Cardona, who served as Economy Minister from 2013 to early 2020 and as Labour’s deputy leader until June 2020, has denied any involvement in criminal activity and has not been charged.

Defence lawyers also intend to call lawyer Arthur Azzopardi to the stand. Azzopardi represented Muscat during his plea negotiations with prosecutors.
