Egyptian Cab Driver Working In Malta Admits To Making Sexual Advances On Tourist
A cab driver confessed to making inappropriate sexual advances towards a tourist who had just arrived in Malta during Court proceedings yesterday.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the woman caught a cab from the airport to Sliema.
According to the testimony presented in court, the driver, Ahmed Hassan Moustafa Moussa Ebid, a 44-year-old Egyptian, initially made unsettling remarks that made the woman uncomfortable and then proceeded to touch her lap.
Despite her protests and efforts to push his hand away, the driver persisted, escalating the situation by touching her inappropriately.
The woman, while discreetly recording the events on her phone, told the driver to stop “a thousand times,” as relayed by police inspector Roxanne Tabone during the court proceedings.
Upon reporting the incident to the police, the woman provided them with the recorded footage.
Police reached out to the cab company to locate the suspect, who admitted his guilt and confirmed it upon arraignment.
During arraignment, the defendant admitted to his wrongdoing. The legal aid lawyer highlighted that the defendant was a first-time offender, had been employed in Malta for an extended period, and expressed remorse for his criminal actions.
Subsequently, the accused was granted pending judgement against a deposit of €500, a personal guarantee of €500, daily registration in the bail book, and strict instructions to avoid contact with the victim. Additionally, the court issued a protection order for the woman’s benefit and imposed a publication ban on her identity.
Prosecution was handled by AG lawyer Jurgen Dalli and inspector Roxanne Tabone, while legal aid counsel was provided by Lawyer Thomas Barbara Sant. Lawyers Rene Darmanin and Alfred Abela represented the parte civile.
