‘El Chapo Ta’ Malta’ Partner Drops Domestic Violence Charges In Court
Jordan Azzopardi, once dubbed the “El Chapo Ta’ Malta” due to his alleged leadership in nationwide drug operations, has made headlines again after his girlfriend surprisingly dropped her domestic violence charges.
Just recently Azzopardi was acquitted of domestic violence charges after his girlfriend requested the court to drop the case against him.
This decision, though controversial, was based on a 2019 judgement in which the court cited the societal importance of “grace over justice” in domestic disputes.
Azzopardi had faced a series of serious allegations, including physically assaulting his partner, sending her threatening messages, and sharing intimate videos of her without consent.
A previous report highlighted that Azzopardi had allegedly threatened to throw his girlfriend off a balcony, following which he sent her 16 voice messages over an 11-hour stretch. One chilling message included a threat stating, “All it will take is €20 worth of acid to peel off your face, breast…”
Despite these grave allegations, the court decided to drop the charges against Azzopardi under Article 543 of Malta’s criminal code. This decision was influenced heavily by the partner’s court testimony, in which she made it clear she did not want the case to continue.
She explained that she had reported Azzopardi in a moment of rashness and impulsivity. Notably, both Azzopardi and his partner are still together and share a residence.
Apart from these recent charges, Azzopardi’s legal battles continue. His most significant case dates back to 2019 when he was charged with leading a nationwide drug operation. This led to him being labelled as the “El Chapo of Malta”. Police operations have targeted drug dens across Malta which later resulted in his arrest.
