Government Secures Property For New Gozo Law Courts For €6 Million
The Government has taken a major step toward strengthening Gozo’s judicial infrastructure with the signing of a Promise of Sale agreement for the former Downtown Hotel in Triq l-Ewropa, Victoria. The property will be transformed into a modern, accessible courthouse that addresses long-standing challenges faced by Gozo’s justice system.
The site was chosen after a thorough evaluation of 11 proposals submitted during the Public Market Consultation launched in November 2022. Criteria included location, accessibility, size, legal and safety compliance, redevelopment feasibility, and cost.
The former hotel emerged as the most suitable option, offering ample space, central accessibility, and strong redevelopment potential. The agreed acquisition price is €6,325,000, with total redevelopment works expected to be completed within three years.
For decades, court services in Gozo have operated from a 17th-century building in the Cittadella. While historically significant, the premises no longer meet modern judicial needs, particularly in terms of accessibility, safety standards, and increasing caseloads. The move to a new building marks a long-awaited upgrade for the island’s legal infrastructure.
Minister for Justice and Reform of the Construction Sector, Jonathan Attard, described the project as a milestone for Gozo, emphasising that justice must not be limited by outdated facilities. Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, welcomed the investment, highlighting its importance for court staff, legal professionals, and the public.
During the announcement, officials presented a walkthrough and artistic impressions of the planned courthouse, offering the community a first look at the future facility. Dr Vanessa Grech, CEO of the Court Services Agency, outlined the detailed process that led to the acquisition. Senior officials, including Permanent Secretaries Johan Galea and Mario Borg, were also in attendance.
