‘I Wanted To Go To Prison,’ Marsa Armed Robber Tells Court After Holding Up Paola Store
In an unusual twist of events, a man has said he wanted to be arrested after being caught attempting to carry out an armed robbery with a knife at a convenience store in Paola,
23-year-old Isaac Grech faced charges of holding a cashier at knifepoint, and carrying a knife in public without a police license. The police were alerted by a report of a suspicious person near the grocery store, prompting officers from the Rapid Intervention Unit to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival, police found Grech allegedly demanding cash from the cashier, with a bag ready to collect the money. However, Grech’s attempt to evade arrest was unsuccessful. He was promptly apprehended on the spot.
Strangely, Grech reportedly told police that he intended to commit the crime to end up in prison. His motives, however, have not yet been disclosed or confirmed by authorities
Police Inspectors Lydon Zammit and Antonello Magri also charged Grech with violating two sets of bail conditions and repeated criminal behaviour, commonly referred to as recidivism.
Despite working in construction, according to his court statement, Grech’s Facebook profile indicates employment with a Maltese betting company. Grech was charged with an attempted robbery, as opposed to a completed crime.
