Six St Vincent De Paul staff members will be charged for the disappearance and death of the 83-year-old dementia sufferer Carmelo Fino, Malta Today reported.

Police have issued charges against the staff members working at the elderly home in which the man was residing, according to the newsroom’s sources.

These charges include involuntary homicide and neglect.

Security personnel and nurses are allegedly among those being charged over the case which is expected to be heard at the beginning of next year in front of Magistrate Marse-Ann Farrugia.

Several staff members were suspended due to the incident while an inquiry led by a former judge into the case found that there were several shortcomings in the care facility, stating that the night shift at the ward did not carry out their duty diligently and thus failed to monitor those in care.

Among those being charged will be social assistance worker Robert Belli, who was one of the employees suspended after the incident. This caused a stir within the Malta Union for Midwives and Nurses who described this case as a frame-up.

The 83-year-old went missing on 28th June 2022 from the care facility and his body was found decomposed on 16th July in Birżebbuġa.

CCTV showed the man walking by Lidl in Luqa at around 3.17am despite workers claiming that they saw Fino in his ward at 5.45am.

The autopsy found that there was no involvement of third parties.
