Matthew Joseph Schembri, a 40-year-old developer associated with the Kordin construction site collapse that resulted in the death of Jean Paul Sofia, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison related to an assault on his former father-in-law.

He was convicted of commissioning an assault on his former father-in-law, Louis Spiteri, who was attacked while jogging on the Sliema promenade according to Malta Today.

The court heard that Schembri arranged for two men to assault Spiteri, offering payment for the act. One of the assailants testified that Schembri promised them money for the assault. The police described Schembri as the “brains” behind the unprovoked attack.

Schembri denied charges of complicity in attempted grievous bodily harm, attempted grievous bodily harm and actual slight bodily harm. However, the court found him guilty based on the evidence presented.

This case adds to Schembri’s legal troubles, as he is also facing involuntary homicide charges related to the December 2022 collapse of the Kordin construction site, which led to the death of Jean Paul Sofia.
