The latest court information reveals that Benjamin Chetcuti was driving at 98 km/hr when he struck 62-year-old Mildred Azzopardi in July.

His speed was confirmed by CCTV footage that shows Chetcuti’s vehicle colliding with a parked car while Azzopardi was placing items in the back of the vehicle.

Superintendent Nicholas Vella testified in court and showed footage from the CCTV cameras which showed the incident. While the video was being played in court, the accused lowered his head and did not look at the footage according to TVM News.

Chetcuti tested positive for alcohol through a breathalyser test. The result of the test was of 139.2 micrograms.

Azzopardi tragically died at the scene after suffering several fractures and serious internal damage. Witnesses detailed the startling incident and Chetcuti’s state of confusion after the fact.

Testifying on behalf of the Road Policing unit was Sergeant Damian Galea. He claimed that some persons were critically hurt in the collision and that the police had been notified. According to him, they were also told that a man was stuck in the vehicle. He stated that there was a lot of chaos and multiple emergency vehicles when he arrived at the area.

Galea claimed to have seen Alfred Azzopardi, who was surrounded by medical professionals and had just been removed from the vehicle in a critical condition. He claimed that the accused was given a breathalyser test as soon as the cars departed the site.

According to Galea, the use of breathalysers by road policing officers is standard procedure for traffic enforcement officers to administer breathalysers, Galea added that other people claimed that Benjamin Chetcuti had an alcoholic odour. The breathalyser test revealed that it was more than five times the legal limit, according to the sergeant.

As the case goes to trial, Chetcuti continues to deny allegations of reckless driving and involuntary homicide.
