Maksar Trial Begins: Prosecution Outlines Motives Behind Two Murders

The jury trial of four men accused of two separate but chilling murders — those of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017 and lawyer Carmel Chircop in 2015 — began on Thursday with powerful and disturbing opening statements from the prosecution.

A Journalist Targeted, A Lawyer Silenced

Attorney General lawyer Anthony Vella set out the prosecution’s case, arguing that Caruana Galizia was killed for her work as a journalist. The plan, he said, was always murder — first by shooting her in her home, then by using a bomb to ensure her death. Fuel was reportedly added to the device to intensify the blast. The journalist’s son Matthew, who witnessed the aftermath of the explosion, is expected to testify in the coming days.

Vella told jurors that whether they agreed with her views or not, there could be no justification for her assassination, reminding the court of the international outrage that followed. “It was a macabre scene,” he said.

In contrast, Carmel Chircop’s murder was allegedly financial. Adrian Agius, one of the accused, is said to have owed Chircop a large sum of money and ordered his killing to avoid repayment. The cost of the contract? €20,000. “That’s how much life costs,” the prosecution bluntly told the court.

Who’s On Trial and What They’re Accused Of

Four men are facing trial: brothers Robert and Adrian Agius, known as “Tal-Maksar”; George Degiorgio, who has already admitted to killing Caruana Galizia; and Jamie Vella. All four are charged in connection with Chircop’s murder. Only Robert Agius and Vella are being tried for supplying the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia.

All the accused have pleaded not guilty.

Two key witnesses — Vince Muscat and Melvin Theuma — will testify under presidential pardon agreements. Muscat is already serving a sentence for Caruana Galizia’s murder; Theuma has admitted to acting as an intermediary and was granted a pardon in exchange for full cooperation.

Vella explained to jurors that the prosecution will present all evidence, question witnesses, and allow for cross-examination. The defence will then have its turn. The accused may testify if they choose. The judge will then guide the jury before deliberation.

The Courtroom and What’s Next

In court today were several members of Caruana Galizia’s family, including her father and son Paul. Vella made a point of stating that both victims were “important and precious,” and that no one has the right to decide whether they live or die.

The court also went through administrative steps, including finalising the jury and giving them instructions. The defence is still awaiting the full list of prosecution witnesses, which is expected to be delivered later tonight.

The trial resumes tomorrow at 9am, with more evidence to be presented by the prosecution.
