A 36-year-old Georgian man living in Sliema was released from custody after being charged with driving under the influence and hitting two cars, including a police vehicle as reported by TVM.

Enver Jaiani was accused of, on 24th August in Sliema and St Julian’s, driving a car in a negligent and dangerous manner; driving under the influence; failing to obey police orders; refusing to provide a breath sample; and causing damage to two vehicles.

The police began investigating after a report of a car driving the wrong way on a one-way street. When officers arrived and tried to stop him, he kept driving.

They followed him until he collided with a private vehicle and a police car. He was stopped, and because there was suspicion he was driving under the influence, he was asked to take a breathalyser test. He initially refused, but later took the test, which showed his alcohol level exceeded the legal limit for driving.

As his name had not yet been taken, he was asked to take another test but refused again, leading to his arrest. He was also asked to give a statement, which he declined to do.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charges and requested to be released from custody, but the prosecution objected. Magistrate Nadia Helena Vella granted the request under several conditions, including a €1,000 deposit and a €3,000 personal guarantee.

The prosecution was led by Inspector Charlon Borg, while the accused was represented by lawyers Stefano Filletti and Francesca Zarb.
