A 25-year-old Pakistani construction worker, Humair Yaqoob, appeared in court this week facing multiple charges after a woman reported being raped and detained in a Sliema apartment between 17th and 18th August.

MaltaToday reported the prosecution told magistrate Noel Bartolo that the woman, who works as an escort, had agreed to meet Yaqoob for sexual services for €200. The case alleges that after entering a fifth-floor apartment, she chose not to go through with the arrangement due to his aggressive behaviour. Yaqoob is accused of forcing himself on her, covering her mouth, and committing sexual assault. During the struggle, the woman reportedly managed to strike him, causing injury, and escaped.

Her mobile phone was said to have fallen during the incident and was allegedly taken by the accused. She later approached the police with footage identifying the building where Yaqoob lived.

Investigators also noted that Yaqoob was already on bail for a separate rape case involving a minor. He was arrested on 25th August. Authorities presented three mobile phones in court: one belonging to the victim and two to Yaqoob, one of which was not functional.

Yaqoob has pleaded not guilty to a series of charges, including rape, unlawful detention, sexual harassment, slight bodily harm, use of violence and intimidation, aggravated theft, harassment and threats, misuse of electronic communications, and breaching previous bail conditions.

The defence, led by Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit, offered a contrasting account, stating that Yaqoob had already paid the victim €200, but she refused intercourse. They claim he then asked her to return the money or comply, and when she refused, the alleged assault occurred. The defence also challenged the legality of his arrest.

At this stage, the defence confirmed it would not seek bail until the alleged victim testifies. The court has also banned the publication of her identity.

The prosecution was led by AG lawyers Cynthia Tomasuolo and Krista Spiteri Lucas together with Inspectors Wayne Buhagiar and Joseph Mallia.

The defence was led by lawyers Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit.

Magistrate Noel Bartolo is presiding over the case.
