Murder Trial Halted As Accused Suffers Heart Attack In Court

Compilation of evidence against a 71-year-old man accused of murdering Kyle Mifsud were interrupted on Friday after the defendant suffered a heart attack during court proceedings.
Salvino Mangion denies murdering 33-year-old Mifsud, who died from gunshot wounds on 22nd September in Vittoriosa. Shortly after Inspector Stephen Gulia concluded his testimony, Mangion complained of chest pain. Court staff gave him water while an ambulance was called. Paramedics reported that he went into cardiac arrest while being examined in the ambulance. He was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital; his condition remains unknown, as reported by Times of Malta.
Inspector Gulia testified that police were alerted by a neighbour who reported a man “wounded and full of blood” in Mangion’s apartment block. Officers found Mifsud with chest and abdominal injuries consistent with shotgun fire. Before collapsing, Mifsud identified “Salvu from the third floor” as his attacker.
Despite losing blood, the victim managed to descend from the third floor, knocking on doors for help. He later died of his injuries.
Mangion told investigators he loaded a shotgun and fired at Mifsud when the younger man demanded cash at his door. CCTV installed by his children captured him holding the weapon. After the shooting, he allegedly washed blood from himself before leaving the building.
A search of his flat uncovered two shotguns, ammunition, and an empty cartridge in a plant pot. His firearms licence had not been renewed since 2021. Luminol testing revealed blood traces in his bathroom.
Neighbours reported hearing banging, a gunshot, and cries.
The case is being prosecuted by Attorney General lawyer Kaylie Bonett, assisted by Inspectors Gulia and Keith Rizzo. Lawyers Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit are representing Mangion, while Nicholas and Mario Mifsud appear for the victim’s family.
Friday’s sitting was adjourned following the medical emergency.
