President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has posted a tribute in honour of the late Pelin Kaya, moments after the news of her murderer’s sentence hit local media.

“Justice would mean Pelin Kaya being with us today. Today, as the news focuses on her killer and his sentence, please remember her,” she said before writing “#StopKillingWomen”.

Jeremie Camilleri was sentenced earlier this morning to 40 years in prison, three years more than the plea deal he signed, and was ordered to pay €20,000.

Judge Consuelo Scerri Herrera was not bound by law to respect the plea agreement, opting for a harsher sentence instead.

13 other charges were lodged against Camilleri, including the threatening of people who rushed to Pelin’s aid, driving under the influence of both cocaine and cannabis, and breaking his probation. During the compilation of evidence, court experts also testified that Camilleri did not apply the breaks when running Kaya over. Police even had to use a taser to subdue him just before his arrest in the middle of the road during a tense altercation.

Rest in peace, Pelin
