Seabank Hotel Victim’s Brothers Receive Fines For Threats In Court

Two relatives of a man who died following a brawl at the Seabank Hotel have been handed a suspended sentence and fined €7,500 each after admitting to threatening police officers and a magistrate.
Horace and Nick Sciortino were arraigned earlier this month after a court expert confirmed that their brother, Roderick Sciortino, had died from a brain aneurysm unrelated to injuries from a poolside fight.
The incident occurred during a court session in which British national Liam Joseph Stacey faced charges of causing grievous bodily harm to Roderick during the July brawl. Stacey denies the charges. During the hearing, a medico-legal expert testified that Roderick sustained no fatal injuries from the fight.
Following this revelation, tensions escalated. The two brothers were removed from the courtroom after one said, “My brother is dead, not your son.” One of the men later re-entered and shouted a profanity in Maltese directed at the justice system. Roderick’s father, Paul, was also fined for filming inside the courtroom. The family subsequently confronted Stacey, shouting accusations against him.
On Thursday, Magistrate Monica Vella handed the brothers a two-year jail term suspended for four years, along with the €7,500 fines according to Times of Malta. A restraining order was also issued in favour of the magistrate and the police officers involved.
Police inspectors Gabriel Micallef and Jeffrey Rizzo prosecuted the case, with the accused assisted by lawyers Amadeus Cachia, Ishmael Psaila and legal procurator Paul Camilleri
