A St James Hospital employee has testified that he twice couriered packages from Corradino Correctional Facility to the Sliema hospital in the ongoing unauthorised medically assisted procreation case involving convicted murderer Erin Tanti, his partner Marisa Gallo, and Dr Josie Muscat.

Testifying in court, Raymond Agius, who has worked at St James Hospital for 10 years, said he agreed to testify after the prosecution confirmed that no criminal action would be taken against him, as reported by Times of Malta. He described his role as an estate facilitator who performs various errands.

Agius recognised Muscat in court and said the doctor instructed him to collect a package from prison. On the first occasion, a Saturday morning, he drove to the facility in a company car, received a sealed white bag from a staff member, and delivered it to St James Capua Hospital, telling reception: “There’s this, Josie sent it.”

A second collection followed, this time using his personal car, when he again received a sealed bag and dropped it off at the Sliema hospital. Agius told the court he did not ask about the contents of the packages, and that no questions were asked by prison staff.

Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Jason Azzopardi, Agius confirmed he had known Muscat for around a decade and that they trusted each other. He added that he had carried out numerous errands for the doctor without questioning their purpose.

The prosecution alleges that Tanti impregnated Gallo while in prison through an unauthorised medical procedure. All three accused have pleaded not guilty.

Also testifying was Dr Christine Schembri Deguara, lead consultant at Hope Fertility Malta, who confirmed that Gallo visited her clinic in October 2024 for a fertility assessment. She said she was unaware of Gallo’s partner’s identity or criminal background and explained that any assisted reproduction procedure requires psychological evaluation and Embryo Protection Authority authorisation.

The case picks up where it left off in December.
