A 59-year-old Swiss man who had admitted to sexually harassing a maid was given a two-year prison term with a three-year suspension on Monday afternoon.

The man’s name is withheld to protect his career, as was approved by court on the defence’s request who said that the incident could have a serious impact on his career.

Police inspector Kelsey Bugeja testified in court saying that during his stay at Corinthia St George’s Bay hotel, the man requested a coffee from a cleaner that was cleaning his room. After she brought the coffee to him, the maid finished cleaning the room and proceeded to cleaning the opposite room.

The man followed the maid outside and asked for a bottle of water. The woman returned to his room to hand him the bottle of water and found the man naked. The man grabbed her and started kissing her face and neck as she attempted to escape the room.

The woman eventually made it out of the room, found another employee and reported the guest to the hotel’s HR department. The police were called and the man was arraigned on Monday afternoon.

The man was charged in court with harassing the woman by attempting to use force against her and exposing her to sexually suggestive behaviours. He acknowledged the accusations.

As long as the victim’s identity was likewise safeguarded, the prosecution did not object to the motion to prohibit the publishing of the man’s name. The court upheld the request and handed the man a two-year prison sentence that is suspended for three years. The victim was granted a three-year restraining order.

Magistrate Leonard Caruana presided. Police inspectors Nico Zarb and Kelsey Bugeja prosecuted. Lawyer Raphael Fenech Adami appeared for the accused.
