Paul Caruana Galizia has shared a moving reflection on his mother Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder and the recent trial that saw two of the men who supplied the bomb that killed her found guilty.

Writing about the moment he awaited the verdict, Caruana Galizia described how his family had prepared statements for both outcomes, guilty or acquittal, each highlighting, “the failures in Malta’s institutions which allowed this to happen remain unaddressed and unreformed.”The Maksar brothers, Adrian Agius and Robert Agius, along with their associates, Jamie Vella and George Degiorgio, were found guilty on 5th June. Five days later, all of the above were imprisoned for life.

Paul went on to say how now that only one jury trial remains as a date still has to be set in the final trial for his mother’s case. Caruana Galizia recalled the horror of the day his mother was killed.

“My eldest brother, Matthew, was one of the first to reach the scene. He ran out of the house barefoot and found the flaming wreckage surrounded by my mother’s remains. She had been driving to the bank, just before three in the afternoon. She wasn’t killed instantly. A nearby farmer heard her scream before the blast hurled her car into a field and set it on fire.”

He went on to describe how his mother exposed corruption at the highest levels of government and business involving Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri, who served in Joseph Muscat’s government and owned secret Panama companies. The journalist’s son expressed his disappointment with how although her murder set off protests, no accountability has been seen. Additionally, he even wrote about how she was persecuted even while she was alive through 48 libels and targeting of places she frequented as well as her circle of friends and magazine business.

He cited the 2021 public inquiry report:
“The findings were devastating: corruption had spread from the prime minister’s office into the police, the anti-money laundering agency, the attorney-general’s office. The report described a ‘collapse of the rule of law’ and made recommendations to restore it,” wrote Caruana Galizia.“Something remarkable endures. Her investigations are still cited in court. Her stories still circulate. She could not be silenced, even by death.”

Although Caruana Galizia did not address what Malta owed his murdered mother, he finished his article with a spine-chilling statement that reflects all the events and the domino effect that was initiated by her investigations and subsequently by her murder.

“There was something else I didn’t know before this trial. The two medics who conducted my mother’s autopsy said they found her heart was, incredibly, ‘intact’ — and that it weighed 300 grammes. The same weight used to kill her was the weight of what endured.”
