PN MP and social worker Graziella Attard Previ said that it is “unacceptable” that a domestic violence victim who has finally managed to muster up the courage to go to court and file a case against their aggressor is summoned to court more than a year later.

“If you file a domestic violence claim with the court now, your first court appointment will be scheduled for the end of January 2025”, said Attard Previ during a Popolin interview on TVM.

Lovin Malta spoke with lawyer Jason Azzopardi who has been vocal about the issue in the past.

Azzopardi substantiated Attard Previ’s claim, explaining that a client of his who filed a domestic violence report last month, has a Court summons on the last week of January 2025.

“The client thought that the date was a mistake. Unfortunately, it was not”, he stated.

This issue has been flagged multiple time by legal practitioners.

However, following Bernice Pace’s murder by her husband in November 2022 and the subsequent independent inquiry by former Judge Jeffrey Valencia, the issue has been pushed to the fore.

Currently, Lydia Abela is spearheading a 16-day awareness campaign of Domestic Violence.

However, Attard Previ has insisted that more needs to be done regarding the court delays.
