A 40-year-old Libyan man who resides in Gozo was accused of slightly injuring his girlfriend and causing her to fear violence, local media has reported.

He was also charged with holding his girlfriend against her will, insulting her, and breaching two sets of bail conditions. He pleaded not guilty

Inspector Antonello Magri testified in court that the police had seen a video recorded by a tourist, which was circulating on social media, including TikTok. The footage, taken on the 25th of July, showed a man inside a car assaulting a woman. The Inspector said that the police immediately launched an investigation, including identifying the car’s license plate number.

When police spoke to the woman, she initially refused to file a report against him. However, later that same day, she spoke to a Police Sergeant about the incident, although she still did not want to make an official report. In the past, she had filed several reports against the accused, but always forgave him afterward.

The police continued their investigation, and the accused was arrested in Gozo at the Rabat Police Station while signing in, as required by his existing bail conditions. The woman was informed of his arrest, and it was at that point that she agreed to file an official report.

In the report, the woman alleged that the two had an argument on 2pm on the 24th of July. While they were in Birżebbuġa. They were swimming, and the man had been drinking. During the argument, he allegedly began pushing her toward the car while insulting her.

She also told the police that after the incident, the man drove toward Gozo, where he lives. She claimed he took remote roads near cliffs and threatened to drive over the edge with both of them in the car.

Once in Gozo, he allegedly locked her inside the house and hid the keys. She only managed to leave around 1am to return to her mother’s house.

The Inspector said the alleged victim told police she was afraid to report her partner because she feared him and still loved him.

In court, it was also said that the accused told police that the woman had allegedly grabbed a knife during the argument and that he had suffered some injuries.

The defense, led by lawyer David Bonello, requested bail, but the prosecution strongly opposed the request.

The defense pointed out that the alleged victim was not present in the courtroom and, based on available information, appeared to have refused to attend.

Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo denied the bail request.
