A woman accused of causing a serious collision in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq pleaded guilty to four of five charges, denying only reckless driving.

Yoana Valentinova Gatt, 44, a Bulgarian national living in St Paul’s Bay, admitted to causing serious bodily harm through negligence, damaging the victim’s motorcycle, driving under the influence and drunk-driving, according to Times of Malta.

Gatt was found to be six times over the legal alcohol limit, with a breathalyser reading of 124.9 μg/100ml. The legal threshold is 22 μg/100ml.

Inspector Nathan Bugeja told the court that the crash occurred just before 3.40pm on Sunday, near the exit to a roundabout. The motorcyclist, initially certified as being at risk of dying, was struck while stationary at a stop sign.

“The motorcycle was at the stop sign on the give way, when Gatt ran over it,” Bugeja said, adding that CCTV footage captured the incident. When asked whether speed was a factor, the inspector said the footage showed no evidence of excessive speed.

Court is still in session
