The EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture) Film Festival is set to take place over six days, from 24th to 29th September at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta.

Fourteen productions will be showcased in celebration of diversity in all its forms.

The festival will feature contributions from 12 members and partners, including the embassies of Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain, as well as the Alliance Française, the Malta Arts Council, the British Council, the European Commission Representation and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.

Owen Bonnici, Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government, announced that this year is especially significant for Malta in the context of EUNIC, as Mary Ann Cauchi, Director of Funds and Strategy at the Malta Arts Council, was appointed as a Director on the EUNIC Board.

“This is a result of the Council’s commitment to international cultural collaborations and inclusivity,” stated Bonnici.

He highlighted the significant progress made in the area of equality, both at the European and local levels, and noted that in less than ten years, Malta has become a leader in Europe for LGBTIQ+ rights.

“This extraordinary achievement didn’t come easily. The status quo was challenged and overcome. It took courage and perseverance. Today, we have secured LGBTIQ+ rights, though there is still more work to be done. However, we have undeniably made great strides in this regard. We have become a symbol of hope and equality worldwide,” Bonnici concluded.

Malta’s production for the festival is titled Carmen, a film inspired by true events and set in Malta. The story follows Carmen, who has been taking care of her brother, a local priest, since she was 16. Now approaching 50, she embarks on a new chapter in her life. As she confronts her past, Carmen brings colour to the lives of the villagers in this story about a woman finding her voice.
