Australian Experimental Musician Oren Ambarchi To Play In Floriana Next Weekend

Acclaimed experimental artist Oren Ambarchi is coming to Malta to play a lowkey gig at Floriana’s The Engine Room next weekend.
Born in Sydney, Ambarchi has been playing live since 1986, collaborating with several other artists including Christian Fennesz, Keith Rowe, and Toshimaru Nakamura.
Ambarchi is a skilled guitarist and percussionist, and his performances showcase his technical ability and virtuosity. But Ambarchi’s music is more than just technical skill – it is a deeply immersive and emotional experience. His music is both meditative and intense, and it has the power to transport listeners to other worlds.
In an interview with ABC Radio broadcaster, Jon Rose, Ambarchi described how he started playing guitar:
“There happened to be one laying around in our rehearsal room. I picked it up and started hitting it with drumsticks and using it in whatever way I wanted to use it, and one thing led to another.”
“I’m glad I wasn’t trained. I’ve always loved rock music, I grew up listening to pop and rock, so that was in my mind, but I’ve also been interested in electronics. I never wanted to learn to play it properly, it was an object as much as an instrument.”
Ambarchi is being hosted in Malta by cultural NGO Kinemastik and artist Nigel Baldacchino, who will introduce the gig with his own prelude.
“I will be doing a gig supporting the incredible Oren Ambarchi. I’m a long-time fan myself, just like anyone who has ever googled ‘experimental music’ in the past two decades or so.”
“Not only does he have a number of releases I care very deeply about, but he also collaborated with a long list of artists which pretty much draws out a wholesome spectrum of the experimental music scene I care about anyway.”
“The venue is f*cking incredible and will be used as a performance space for the very first time as far as anyone can tell.”
The venue, Magazino, is the engine room of the old power station, opposite the catamaran terminal at Pinto Wharf, Floriana. It was originally built by the Knights of Malta to store grain.
Kinemastik has a history of bringing niche acts to original and quirky venues – including Bonny Prince Billy at the Garden Of Rest, Uwe Bastiansen on the roof of the Citylights Cinema, and now Oren Ambarchi at the Engine Room. This is besides their cinematic events including The Kinemastik Short Film Festival in Summer.
The gig will be held on Saturday 22nd April. Until the ticketing system is in place you can reserve a place via email at: [email protected]
