A better standard of living is reached when the production of the built environment and how we interact with it is adequately thought of. Be it, planning, building, remodeling, or conservation – this is Baukultur

But why is it so important?

Back in 2018, the Davos Declaration was signed by European Ministers of Culture, including Malta. The declaration highlights pathways for politically and strategically promoting the concept of high-quality Baukultur

In essence, it reminds us that buildings form part of space culture, as well as serve as a creator of it.

Fast forward to Davos Alliance 2023

The conference, titled ‘Common Wealth – Shared Responsibility’, is the second of its kind and builds upon what was achieved during the first ministerial conference in 2018.

During the second conference, the so-called ‘Davos Alliance’ was created in order to better achieve the goals set out in the declaration.

It is crucial that we preserve and develop quality buildings and cities that are sustainable and culturally relevant. This way, we achieve a high-quality Baukultur, which leads to a more cohesive society, sustainable economic prosperity, and better general living standards,” Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici said, who attended the conference.

“We need to provide a more salutary environment for our citizens where they can live, work and prosper throughout their life. The integration of cultural and environmental aspects have thus become central, especially in view of the ever-changing needs of our societies,” concluded Bonnici.

The conference was attended by European Ministers, representatives from various sectors, the European Commission, UNESCO, and various international organisations.

At the conference, Minister Bonnici joined the rest of the European ministers in expressing solidarity with the people of Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s military aggression.
