On 13th December 1974, as rain poured down, crowds gathered at St. George’s Square in Valletta to witness the inaugural address of Malta’s first President, Sir Anthony Mamo, marking the nation’s establishment as a republic. Fifty years on, the Maltese and Gozitan people are once again invited to this historic square to witness a celebration of their shared heritage — the story of Malta as a Republic.

The chosen theme, ‘L-Istorja, Int’ encapsulates a personal, human dimension to the national day, emphasising that Malta’s history is truly the story of every Maltese and Gozitan citizen.

At a press conference, it was announced that the centrepiece of this commemorative anniversary will be an audio-visual spectacle titled ‘L-Istorja, Int’ scheduled for 13th, 14th and 15th December, at St. George’s Square. The event will transform the Presidential Palace’s facade into a modern canvas, visually narrating Malta’s journey as a republic.

Minister for the Arts, Owen Bonnici, explained that the theme was chosen to remind citizens that, collectively and individually, they have contributed to the milestones Malta has achieved as a Republic. Over the last fifty years, Malta’s history has been, and continues to be, written by each of its citizens.

“These celebrations not only mark a significant anniversary but also serve as an invitation to every Maltese and Gozitan citizen to participate in the next chapter of Malta’s story,” Minister Bonnici noted. “This chapter will again be written by all, as was the first fifty years.”

Festivals Malta Chairman Aaron Zahra shared that the Maltese people deserve to celebrate this important national occasion with dignity and grandeur. ‘L-Istorja, Int’ will recount Malta’s achievements over the years, from its beginnings as a Republic to its present status, offering a uniquely engaging portrayal of the nation’s narrative.

Festivals Malta CEO Frans Agius emphasised that the organisation is committed not only to celebrating the 50th anniversary but also to conveying the significance of this milestone in Malta’s recent history. “Through the National Celebrations Foundation and the National Festivals Committee, Festivals Malta will celebrate the 50th anniversary alongside the Maltese and Gozitan people,” Mr. Agius added.

National Celebrations Chair Liam Gauci highlighted that Malta, despite its small size, has consistently sought to lead in international dialogue. He reflected on the nation’s journey over the past fifty years, celebrating the Republic’s achievements as Malta takes charge of its own future.

In the coming days, an educational campaign will be launched, involving Maltese, Gozitans and even those who have made Malta their home. This campaign will showcase the benefits that the Republic has brought to the nation, while reflecting on memorable moments in Malta’s history and hopes for the future.

All are invited to attend ‘L-Istorja, Int’ in Valletta. Free tickets are available at showshappening.com.
