The Malta African Festival of Arts kicked off this week at the Lower Barrakka in Valletta – in its first-ever appearance in Malta.

The festival covers five principal disciplines: African dance and theatre, music, fashion, films, and crafts.

Wednesday’s events will feature African music and film – with three intriguing African films from Egypt, Ghana and Southern Africa.

“The events will be a celebration of diversity, and coming together for many people. We have a wonderful line up that will help us share African creativity at its best,” said MAFA organisers to Lovin Malta.

“Our aim is to use African cinema to promote and increase knowledge of African creative arts, literature and culture; to develop an audience for African films and to expand the opportunities for the distribution of African films in the diaspora and abroad.”

On Thursday, MAFA will host an African Day Dinner – the only event which won’t be open to the public, as MAFA organisers ran an open call for dinner which was “overwhelmingly subscribed”.

African Dance will be on display on Friday when Ubuntu Drum and Dance – a group based in Greece and made up of dancers from across the African continent – will give performances depicting the realm of “AfroGeek urbanity”.

The festival will be brought to a close on Saturday, when the Africa Day Concert will bring musical artists such as DJ Dollarino, z16, Andrew Bello and TSUNGAI together to play MAFA out in glorious style.

All of MAFA’s events will be held in open air with limited seating – but a lot more standing space. Seating will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

MAFA depends on funding from authorities such as the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, and private donors including local businesses and multinational corporations.

Organisers hope to host MAFA every year in late May, to coincide with Africa Day on 25th May each year.
