Earlier this year, the work at St John Bastion was completed. The restoration work of the fort started in August 2021 and continues as we speak. Over €500,000 has been invested in the works.

These two landmarks form part of a much larger restoration project which forms part of the Cottonera Lines.

But what are the Cottonera Lines?

Also known as the Velperga Lines, these lines are fortifications found in Bormla and Birgu. They were built in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The project is encompassing restoration of a large part of this area. From the Bastion of St Paul, Fort of St Clement, Bastion of Notre Dame and The Margherita Lines.

The Minister for the National Heritage Owen Bonnici, together with the Parliamentary Secretary Alison Zerafa Civelli visited the restoration works this month.

“We continue to build on our commitment to Cultural Heritage, as part of our ongoing work to safeguard the patrimonial heritage of our country,” Minister Owen Bonnici said.

“This work gives me a lot of satisfaction because I am seeing the strategy of Cottonera being carried out, and open spaces around the forts will be new spaces that can be enjoyed by people,” Cottonera Foundation Chairman Glenn Bedingfield stated.

Now that the restoration of the fort has been completed, the works are now focusing on the restoration of the baroque gates.
