Trigger warning: this article refers to public violence

A woman has reached out to Lovin Malta to describe her father’s assault which saw him “being knocked unconscious” in a shocking public road rage incident.

She alleged that as she was sitting in the passenger seat, with her father driving, “a food delivery courier on his motorcycle cut across us from the inside of the road, which could’ve ended in a very serious accident”.

They avoided this serious accident – while the courier “yelled racial slurs” at her father “swearing at him for no reason”.

“Out of kindness,” she continued, “my father stopped the car further up – so not to obstruct any traffic – to see if something had happened even though he was driving in his lane as one does and was certain he had not caused the driver any harm.”

“As soon as my father went to ask the driver why he was yelling and swearing, the driver got off his bike and knocked my father unconscious.”

At this point, the driver’s daughter got out of the car to help him.

“The driver was then threatening that he will kill my father and said so multiple times while also yelling in my face.”

“The police had been doing rounds in the area when they immediately stopped to see what had happened.”

The alleged victim’s daughter provided Lovin Malta with a Discharge Note from the Mater Dei Emergency Department, which described the man’s injuries as “bruising to the lower eyelid, and headaches, after being punched in face” – along with a Ticket of Referral to the A&E department.

This latter document delineated the way the story was told immediately after the incident.

“55-year-old male was involved in a fight at 4pm. Was punched by the other person, and patient fell backwards as a result. Daughter accompanying patient claimed he lost consciousness for few seconds,” it read.

The daughter added that no arrest was made despite this alleged assault. Lovin Malta contacted the police to ask if they had any record of the incident – which took place on 13th April at around 4pm – they did not have any response in time for the publication of this article.

The alleged victim’s daughter requested that their identities be concealed as she expressed her hope that telling this story would prevent people from engaging in road rage incidents.

“I am writing this not for sympathy or to get pity, but I have to make people aware of how unsafe the driving situation in Malta has become and how for literally doing nothing or doing the right thing you could almost get beaten to death.”
