Discover The Rich Heritage Of Kottonera: A New Interactive Portal Launch
A new interactive portal has been launched about the Kottonera region, aimed at providing the public with a fresh way to explore the rich history and culture of the three cities: Birgu, Bormla and Isla, along with the village of Kalkara.
The portal is named Tales of Kottonera.
The collective name of the region derives from Fra’ Nicolás Cotoner y del Oleza, the 17th-century Spanish Grand Master who commissioned the construction of the fortifications known as the Cottonera Lines, which protected it from attacks. Even before the arrival of the Knights of St. John on the island, these areas were already the maritime centre of the country—where Malta met the world and where new ideas and teachings flourished.
The new portal, developed by Heritage Malta through its Publications and Education and Outreach Departments in collaboration with Marketlink Ltd., serves as a treasure trove of resources, perspectives, historical facts, lesser-known tales and intriguing curiosities about these iconic areas. With accessibility and interactivity prioritised, the content is designed for various age groups and audiences—from young children to tourists and history enthusiasts. The project also includes broader aims to promote collaboration and resource sharing among stakeholders united by the subject.
“This new portal reflects our dedication to cultural preservation while ensuring that the stories of Kottonera reach a wide audience. It celebrates not only the architectural wonders and historical figures of the region but also the everyday lives of the people who have shaped Malta’s identity over the centuries,” Owen Bonnici, Minister for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, remarked.
“With the launch of Tales of Kottonera, we are strengthening our connection to these significant areas and making our heritage more accessible to both Maltese residents and visitors. This portal is a beautiful example of how technology and storytelling can come together to inspire future generations,” Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli stated.
“Tales of Kottonera continues to bridge the gap between the past and the present, bringing the vibrant stories of Birgu, Isla, Bormla, and Kalkara to life for all ages. We aimed to provide an interactive and immersive experience that invites everyone to discover the roots of these extraordinary towns and celebrate the traditions and resilience that define the people of the Kottonera region,” Noel Zammit, Executive Chairman of Heritage Malta, commented.
