An American theatrical producer known for his work of combining fashion with theatre visited Malta’s historic St John’s Co-Cathedral.
“The ceiling tells the life story of St John the Baptist (I’m in love with the shadows behind the figures in third video that make them look like dimensional people sitting in front of the ceiling),” Jordan Roth wrote on Instagram.
Roth posted a beautifully descriptive caption, highlighting the things that stood out to him during his cultural visit, praising the door handle and knocker “of [his] dreams” captured toward the end of his post.
“Come on in, angel,” he wrote, referencing the intricate use of angels in these small structures.
“The floors are completely covered with the marble tombstones of the knights. Fourth is one of two Caravaggio canvases that are marvels of art innovation, and 9th is what happens when the tomb sculpture arrives from Italy and the angels trumpet is too big – you chop out the wall to make it fit.”
In a separate social media post, Roth praised Malta once again calling it “magic” and posting a series of images in Valletta with his partner Richie Jackson, author of bestselling book #GayLikeMe.
The St John’s Co-Cathedral was built by the Order of the Knights of St John and completed in 1577, soon after the Great Siege. The Order dedicated this church to St John the Baptist.
Jordan Roth is a big name in the US’ fashion and theatre industries. As the president of Jujamcyn Theaters on Broadway, he’s attended the Met Gala five times and was even marked as one of the event’s “most exuberant and fabulous dressers” by Vogue.
